Οι πατάτες και οι «οικολογικές» χρήσεις τους

1. Πηγή ισχύος

Οι πατάτες έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί ως πηγή ενέργειας για αρκετά εφευρέσεις. Ίσως το πιο γνωστό είναι ότι μαθητές έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει τις πατάτες για να ανάψουν μια λάμπα ή ένα ψηφιακό ρολόι. Η πατάτα ενεργεί σχεδόν σαν μια μπαταρία, στην πραγματικότητα τροφοδοτεί τη συσκευή για κάποιο χρονικό διάστημα.

2. Εκτυπωτικό φωτογραφιών

Στα παλιότερα φιλμ των πάλαι ποτέ vintage φωτογραφικών μηχανών, οι φωτογράφοι για να εκτυπώσουν τις φωτογραφίες, βουτούσαν τα αρνητικά σε ένα υγρό που περιείχε κόκκους αμύλου πατάτας.

3. Υποκατάστατο πλαστικού

Το άμυλο από τις πατάτες μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί ως άριστο υποκατάστατο για την υπερβολική χρήση του πλαστικού καθώς είναι το ιδανικό υλικό για τη δημιουργία πλήρως βιοδιασπώμενων κουταλιών, πιρουνιών και πιάτων.

4. Καθαριστικό του δέρματος

Οι πατάτες είναι πολύ αποτελεσματικές όταν πρόκειται για την περιποίηση του δέρματος καθώς απομακρύνουν σπυράκια, μαύρα στίγματα και ακμή, ενώ συντελούν στη μείωση της λιπαρότητας. Κόψτε μια πατάτα και τρίψτε όλο το δέρμα, ξεπλύνετε και σκουπίστε απαλά. Επίσης χτυπήστε στο μούλτι 2 πατάτες να γίνουν μία πάστα. Στη συνέχεια απλώστε την σαν μάσκα στο πρόσωπο και αφήστε 15 λεπτά. Ξεπλύνετε καλά και εφαρμόστε μία φορά την εβδομάδα.

5. Καταπραϋντικό για το στομαχόπονο και τις καούρες

Ο χυμός από τις πατάτες δεν είναι νόστιμος αλλά είναι μαγικός όταν πρόκειται για καούρες και στομαχόπονο. Περάστε 2 ωμές πατάτες στον αποχυμωτή και προσθέστε ένα καρότο. Καταναλώνετε 1 ποτήρι κάθε μέρα στα πλαίσια και μιας υγιεινής διατροφής.

6. Μαλακτικό για τους μαύρους κύκλους στα μάτια

Η έλλειψη ύπνου και οι κραιπάλες δημιουργούν μαύρους κύκλους στην επίμαχη περιοχή. Κόψτε φέτες τις πατάτες και τοποθετήστε μία σε κάθε μάτι. Αφήστε 20 λεπτά και επαναλάβετε τακτικά.

7. Καθαριστικό σκουριάς

Οι πατάτες περιέχουν ένα είδος οξέος που τρώει τη σκουριά και την αφαιρεί από οποιαδήποτε μεταλλική επιφάνεια. Ο καλύτερος τρόπος για να χρησιμοποιήσετε αυτήν τη μέθοδο είναι να κόψετε μια πατάτα στη μέση και να τρίψετε τη σκουριασμένη περιοχή. Αφήστε για περίπου μισή ώρα και στη συνέχεια τρίψτε με ένα σφουγγάρι με το “άγριο” μέρος του για να γυαλίσει.

8. Γυαλιστικό παπουτσιών

Κόψτε μια πατάτα στη μέση και γυαλίστε απευθείας το δέρμα. Σχεδόν αμέσως θα παρατηρήσετε ένα θάμπωμα. Αφήσε για 5 λεπτά και τρίψτε με ένα πανί ή μία βούρτσα. Σαν καινούρια.

9. Γυαλιστικό ασημικών

Βράστε μία-δύο πατάτες και κρατήστε το νερό. Αφήστε να κρυώσει και βάλτε μέσα τα ασημικά σας για περίπου 20 λεπτά. Σκουπίστε καλά και απολαύστε τη γυαλάδα τους!

10. Κόλλα για τα ξύλα

Πατάτες εξακολουθούν να χρησιμοποιούνται σε πολλές από τις μεγαλύτερες βιομηχανίες ξύλου στον κόσμο, για το κολλώδες εκχύλισμα που παράγουν, το οποίο χρησιμοποιείται αντί της ακριβότερης κόλλας ανάμεσα στα στρώματα ξύλου, για να συνενωθούν μεταξύ τους δημιουργώντας ένα ισχυρό καδρόνι.

«Aκαδημία Μεταξά» στις ορεινές αναβαθμίδες και τη φρουτώδη ανάσα της Σάμου.

Το άρωμα του μικρόρωγου μοσχάτου και τα μυστικά δημιουργίας του ΜΕΤΑΧΑ*: Ώριμα ροδάκινα, πορτοκαλένια φλούδα, αποξηραμένα άνθη μα και σύκα, καπνός και σοκολάτα, υπέροχες οσμές από δρύινο βαρέλι κι αυτό το διαφορετικό… «κάτι» που το έχει κάνει παγκοσμίως γνωστό και ιδιαιτέρως αγαπητό στους λάτρεις των διακριτών γεύσεων.

Η «Ακαδημία Μεταξά» αποτελεί ένα καινοτόμο concept το οποίο ο Οίκος Μεταξά ξεκίνησε και υλοποιεί με επιτυχία στο νησί της Σάμου από το 2011. Πρόκειται για πρόγραμμα εκπαίδευσης και φιλοξενίας στην Ελλάδα, το οποίο απευθύνεται σε δημοσιογράφους από όλον τον κόσμο, αλλά και στο εξειδικευμένο κοινό ομάδων πωλήσεων και marketing, οινοχόοων και οινολόγων, διακεκριμένων οινογευστών…

Στόχος του προγράμματος είναι να αναδείξει την μοναδική τέχνη της δημιουργίας του ΜΕΤΑΧΑ, στην οποία συμμετέχει σημαντικά το αρωματικό μοσχάτο κρασί της Σάμου.

Οι συμμετέχοντες έχουν την ευκαιρία να ανηφορίσουν στους ορεινούς αμπελώνες του νησιού, να συνομιλήσουν με ντόπιους αμπελοκαλλιεργητές που καλλιεργούν τους πατρογονικούς αμπελώνες  σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, να περιηγηθούν στο Μουσείο Σαμιακού Οίνου, αλλά και να γνωρίσουν την τοπική γαστρονομία.

Το 48ωρο πρόγραμμα συνεχίζεται στην Αθήνα και στα κελάρια του Οίκου Μεταξά, όπου οι καλεσμένοι μαθαίνουν τα μυστικά της δημιουργίας του αυθεντικού Ελληνικού ποτού, από τον Metaxa Master Κωνσταντίνο Ράπτη.

Προσφάτως, ο οίκος Μεταξά βραβεύτηκε στα TOURISM AWARDS 2017 και στην κατηγορία των καινοτόμων concept ακριβώς για αυτήν την ιδιαιτέρως επιτυχημένη «Ακαδημία Μεταξά» που φέρνει σε επαφή τους ειδήμονες του με τους αμπελώνες, το μικρόρωγο μοσχάτο, την οινική παραγωγή και την πολυπολιτισμική διαδρομή της ΣΑΜΟΥ…

Wine Book Reviews: Cork Dork

Calling all gonzo wine geeks, aspiring somms, restaurant lifers, science nerds and culture critics. There is something in Bianca Bosker’s book “Cork Dork” for all of you. The book goes on sale today from Penguin Books Original.

The run-on title (“A Wine-Fueled Adventure Among the Obsessive Sommeliers, Big Bottle Hunters, and Rogue Scientists Who Taught Me to Live for Taste”) aside, this book is as fresh and fun as a Wachau Riesling. Bosker’s book is packed with helpful information, wrapped in honest inquiry, and slathered with humor and wit. “Less a journey from grape to glass… this is an adventure from glass to gullet,” she writes. And, sure enough, there is a whole lot of cork-popping, glass-draining hedonism recollected in 300-something pages. But there’s also plenty of information that should be useful for both wine novices and other “cork dorks.”

Many readers may have seen the movie “Somm,” and its sequel, which chronicle several sommeliers studying for the Master Sommelier exam. While I liked “Somm,” I feel Bosker’s book may provide an easier hook for casual wine fans who want to know about the fast-paced, bottle-clinking life of America’s wine stewards. Bosker’s book jumps into some of the same waters (the pre-blind taste test jitters, cramming for the written test with appellation flash cards, stressing out of the service exam), but she tells the story from the perspective of an outsider, a neophyte, a “civilian.” Combined with her punchy, intelligent prose, this outsider perspective on the hardcore New York wine subculture makes it accessible.

Having spent much of her journalism career focused on technology, Bosker strives to break complex subjects down into digestible parts. Where there is myth, she wants to find demonstration. Where there are powerful personalities making wide-sweeping claims (there might be a few of those in the wine world), she wants to find out if those claims hold up to scrutiny.

But Bosker does more than rehash stories about the intensity of wine study programs and the difficulty of big blind tastings. She spends time with flavor scientists and neuroscientists to try to figure out whether wine expertise is a definitive, demonstrable thing.

“Somewhere along the skeptic spectrum between atheists and flat-Earth truthers, there is a sizeable contingent of people who believe wine expertise plain just doesn’t exist,” Bosker writes. But then, instead of throwing her hands up, she goes out and investigates. She even goes under an fMRI after her year-long wine studies to see how they have altered the way her brain works.

Using language to describe wine is, it turns out, important to how our senses perceive, and how our memory registers, wine. Especially in the context of sommelier study programs and blind tasting — it is absolutely necessary to assign specific wines labels and descriptors using language. Bosker talks to researchers about this topic, and there are some fascinating results.

Summarizing one researcher’s findings: “If we don’t have the vocabulary to describe an experience, our struggle to convey that encounter in words — and it will be a struggle — corrupts our impression of it, a phenomenon known as ‘verbal overshadowing.’ Asked to talk about something like a glass of wine, people who lack the terminology to do so later become far worse at recognizing the same wine again than individuals who weren’t pressed for words. People who have jargon to rely on aren’t as affected by verbal overshadowing.”

The science Bosker digs into is too in-depth to cover here, but I’ve included two quotes from Bosker below, in which she is summarizing scientific studies.

“Professional tasters really have taught themselves to experience wine differently from amateurs. And the smells in a glass of Cabernet Franc are not… tickling the leftover, primitive side of our gray matter. To the contrary, wine demonstrably activates more advanced, higher-level parts of the brain.”

“Similarly, wine expertise comes by paying attention, sensing clearly, and then imposing meaning onto those physical sensations. Language, for instance, is thought to play a key role in boosting odor discrimination. The pros improve their olfactory skills as they learn to assign names and meanings to smell.”

No dead horse wine topic has been beaten more than the wine tasting note. I’ve written thousands of them and read dozens of screeds about their frivolous nature. But Bosker, while acknowledging the absurdity of some extremely purple prose, approaches this subject with an open mind, and achieves the near impossible: she writes about how we describe wine in a way that is fun to read.

I also appreciate her perspective as a woman in the wine world, as those voices are not always amplified as much as they should be. Bosker talks openly about being hit on by obnoxious drunk men at La Paulée, being groped at wine tasting events, and otherwise being objectified and harassed by pompous jerks. As a man, I’ve felt awkward and out of place in many wine crowds, but never have I feared for my safety or personal privacy, so I appreciate Bosker bringing those issues to light in the way she does.

This book is a fascinating read for wine-lovers all over the nerd spectrum, and I highly recommend it.

I’ll finish off with two memorable quotes from Bosker’s friend Morgan the Somm, who takes Bosker under his wing and has a way with wine words.

“Bottles of wine are ways that my humanity will be changed.”

“Wine for me is just a touch point to a wider world view: That I am not important. That I am a sack of water and organs that’s going to be here on Earth for eighty years if I’m lucky. And so I should figure out some way to make that count.”

Time To Play Some Wine Games

For those of us who enjoy a little fun and folly, here are several intriguing games all centered around the topic of wine.

Trivia

Wine Wars: Wine Wars covers the gamut, with categories including, “Vine to Vino” (viticulture and vinification), the “Wine Cellar” (buying, storing and tasting), and Cork Culture (wineries, business and art). Questions like “Which famous French wine is typically made from a blend of Sémillion, Sauvignon and Muscadelle grapes?” are an example of the level of difficulty.

Who’s it For? Wine trivia games have questions of a moderate to high degree of difficulty, but should be doable if you’re keeping up with your Wine Folly blogs. They often level the playing field by including a luck/strategy component or team play if you just happen to be gaming with a Master Sommelier in your midst.

 

Classic Games

It seems like every classic game has a wine-themed version. The only one we couldn’t find was wine Twister. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if that’s a good or bad thing.

Wine-O Of course someone has created a Bingo for oenophiles, and it’s aptly named. Wine-O features grape varietals in place of numbers and wine corks to mark your wooden scorecard. As an alternative, Wine-Opoloy plays on the most classic of all board games, Monopoly, swapping properties and railroads for grapes and wine regions.

Who’s it For? You and your friends. And if you’re playing wine Bingo, don’t forget your grandma too.

 

Murder Mystery

A Taste for Wine and Murder A wine-based murder mystery game where the premise is described as “A body was discovered at a California vineyard, and you must solve the murder before the killer strikes again.” Tantalizing. Calling itself “a dinner party in a box,” the kit includes character booklets and crime scene clues, along with party invitations and a party planning booklet with things like menu and costume suggestions.

Who’s it For? For those of us who like to go all-out for dinner parties. On the other hand, if you want to solve a wine-themed murder without the dinner party fuss, grab Cabernet and Foul Play instead. In this game, “a mystery is fermenting” when a rival winemaker goes missing. The only hope to find him resides with clues found in the accompanying 1000-piece puzzle.

 

Puzzles

Puzzles might just be one of the best wine-sipping activities ever. We found so many puzzles of wine-related scenes that we may never have to look at a pile of corks ever again!

3D Wine Puzzles If working in two dimensions (relatively speaking) bores you, grab a 3D version. You can find wooden puzzles in the shape of a wine bottle or glass that double as decorative pieces once you’ve completed the challenge.

Who’s it For? You’re either a puzzle person, or you’re not. With a wide range of difficulty levels, it’s easy to find one that fits your needs. As a bonus, if you happen to spill your glass all over the table, with the right 2D scene, it might just blend in.

 

Brain Teasers

These contraptions wrap securely around a real bottle of wine (that you supply), preventing its access unless you break a code. They usually require creativity, thought, patience and finesse to remove.

Vino Vault Wine Cryptex and Don’t Break The Bottle Wine Caddy Vino Vault Wine Cryptex involves letter combinations that you set, not unlike a suitcase lock. If you’re ready to get a bit wilder, wrap your bottle in a more complex metal (or wooden) multi-step, mind bending apparatus, like Don’t Break the Bottle, instead.

Who’s it For? If you like delayed gratification, want to up the stakes on your quest for puzzle domination, or simply make your friends work a little harder for their hostess gift, you’ll love bottle vaults. Personally, the phrase “don’t break the bottle” is just the kind of foreshadowing that I like to avoid.

If you are good at strategy-based games, you’re already smarter than us. These games take you right into vineyards and wineries, tasking you to buy grapes, invest in regions, pray for good weather, price distributions, trade wines and even pay off loans. We found an awesome forum fueled by obsessed gamers that’s worth perusing for advice on strategy-based wine games.

Grand Cru Grand Cru challenges you to manage the economic process of making wine. You must first buy the right grapes for the best wines for your own vineyard. Next you are tasked with navigating all aspects from harvest to vinification to the selling of the final product to pay off your business loans, all the while competing with your opponents who must do the same. The player who is left with the most money after their wine is sold and loans paid off is the winner.

Who’s it For? The hardcore gamer, or “strategery” lover. If you played Risk day and night as a kid, and are ready to swap wine for your go-to childhood beverage, you’ll love Grand Cru and other such strategy games.

 

Blind Tasting Party Games

A bounty of blind tasting games exist. Unfortunately most are filled with extraneous items like invites, bottle cover bags and cheesy CD music. The most interesting game we found in our research also happened to be the least serious.

Read Between the Wines! Read Between the Wines! is not necessarily blind tasting, but will help you connect your senses of smell and taste to descriptive vocabulary, albeit in comical ways. The idea is to creatively describe the various wines you’re sampling according to one of 54 themes such as, “Compare This Wine to a Celebrity [or friend],” To which you might respond, “This rose is pink, fruity, high in alcohol, pleasantly dry and faintly bitter, like Madeline after a day of too much fun in the sun.”

Who’s it For? Anyone who wants to challenge their senses and explore new varietals or regions would benefit from (blind) tasting games. For a do it yourself version, grab some brown lunch bags and a Wine Folly tasting mat kit, complete with guided tasting placemats and a handy wine aroma wheel.
